Georgia Private Detective and Private Security

Training Requirements

Governing Agency
Georgia Private Detective and Security Agencies are regulated by the Georgia Secretary of State’s Office,  Georgia Board of Private Detectives & Security Agencies.

Steve Cassell, Chief Academic Officer at NITA, holds a CLTR license #001021 and is an approved provider or Private Detective and Private Security training.

Private Detective Licensing Information

Requirements for a GA Private Detective License:

• 2 years of investigative experience or a 4 year Criminal Justice degree and if you are the designee for the License, the 70 hour training course is required.
• State Exam - The Georgia Private Investigator exam consists of 80 questions and takes roughly 90 minutes to complete.

For the Private Detective Employee License, the follow is required:

• 70 hour training course and employment under a Private Detective Company License.
• Continuing Education - Licensed Investigators in Georgia are required to take 16 hours of Continuing Education every two years. 

Security Licensing Information

Requirements for a GA Private Security License:

• 2 years of security or investigative experience or a 4 year Criminal Justice degree
• State Exam - The Georgia Private Investigator exam consists of 80 questions and takes roughly 90 minutes to complete

For the Security Employee License, the follow is required:

• 24 hour training course and employment under a licensed company
• Continuing Education - Licensed Security Officers in Georgia are required to take 8 hours of Continuing Education every two years.
