Idaho Certified Private Investigator Program

The Idaho Certified Private Investigator (CPI) Program is a nationally recognized certification developed by the Private Investigators Association of Idaho (PIAI). Designed in collaboration with NITA, this fully online curriculum integrates pre-selected NITA training modules and the PIAI certification exam, offering a comprehensive overview of the investigative profession with a focus on Idaho-specific practices and laws.

Upon completion, candidates will take the Idaho Certified Private Investigator Exam, a 100-question multiple-choice test based on Idaho statutes and legal standards.

Program Fees and Benefits (Current Members)

For Private Investigator Association of Idaho (PIAI) Members – $299:
  • Access to NITA’s online training platform with selected NITA training modules geared for the Idaho Private Investigator
  • Idaho Certified Private Investigator Course and exam, along with a course certificate of completion
  • Members completing the training are required to confirm that they meet all eligibility requirements (listed below)

  • Idaho Certified Private Investigator Course and exam, along with a course certificate of completion
  • Course bundle includes one-year Private Investigators Association of Idaho membership dues and a non-refundable applicant background check fee

**Eligibility Requirements**

"To qualify for the Idaho CPI Certification, candidates must pass the test at the end of this training course, as well as meet all of the other eligibility requirements."

  • Be a member of the Private Investigators Association of Idaho (PIAI)
  • Provide proof of liability insurance (minimum $500,000 coverage)
  • Provide a business license (if required in your jurisdiction)Hold a valid private investigator license issued by the local city (if required)  **Note: CPI certification does not replace local licensing requirements
  • Provide verifiable documentation of at least 250 hours of investigative experience
  • Be 21 years of age or older
  • Successful completion of the PIAI Certified Private Investigator Course with a score of 75% or higher.

This program offers objective proof of your professional knowledge, skills, and credibility in the private investigation field—an asset to both new and experienced investigators seeking to advance their careers in Idaho and beyond. Successful completion of the Idaho Private Investigators Certification Program grants the use of the professional designation CCertified Private Investigator, and its post-nominals CPI (i.e. John Davis CPI), and the CPI logo.
