Georgia Private Detective

Training Requirements

Governing Agency
Georgia Private Investigators are regulated by the Georgia Secretary of State’s Office, Georgia Board of Private Detectives & Security Agencies. In Georgia, any individual who engages in investigative activities needs to be licensed in the state of Georgia.  In Georgia, licenses are issued only to companies and the company submits the investigator’s application to the state. Find more info here.

  • Private Detective License:
    • 2 years of investigative experience or a 4 year CJ degree
    • Exam Required for Private Detective License
  • If you are the designee for the License, the 70 hour training course is required
  • For the Private Detective Employee License, the follow is required:
    • 70 hour training course and employment under Private Detective License

State Exam
The Georgia Private Investigator exam consists of 80 questions and takes roughly 90 minutes to complete.

Continuing Education
Licensed Investigators in Georgia are required to take 16 hours of Continuing Education every two years.
