Start or Advance Your Security Career in California

California offers a wide range of opportunities for security guards, but it also has one of the more structured security licensing processes in the country. Unlike many other states, California requires security guards to complete training in phases before and after registration.

California Security Guard Training Requirements

To begin working as a security guard in California, you’ll need to register with the state and complete required training within strict timelines. The process includes both initial in-person training and additional coursework after registration.

Before applying:

You must complete 8 hours of training on Powers to Arrest and Use of Force. This training must be completed in a classroom setting and is not offered by NITA. After completing this initial classroom training, you can apply for your California Guard Card.

After registration:

California requires additional training after you receive your Guard Card:

  • 16 hours of training within the first 30 days
  • An additional 16 hours of training within the first 6 months
  • 8 hours of continuing education each year

NITA’s online California security guard courses are designed to help you complete your post-registration and continuing education requirements on schedule.

  2. Submit your application to the state
Apply for your Guard Card through the California Bureau of Security and Investigative Services. This includes submitting your application, paying fees, and completing fingerprinting and a background check.
  3. Get approved and begin working
Once your application is processed and approved, you’ll receive your Guard Card and can begin working as a registered security guard in California.
